49er Grad Series: Glitter Blowing 101

Glitter Blowing 101

Get in loser, we’re going shopping!

Finding the right type of glitter can be difficult. Keep in mind that "extra fine” sounds enticing, but does not show up well on camera. The chunkier, the better! Michaels is my go-to craft store and has lots of different options when it comes to glitter, confetti and glitter alternatives (like sprinkles)!

Here are a few of my favorite selections:

  • Super Chunky Gold Glitter (Michaels) Feel free to use your favorite color or a color that goes well with your outfit/tassel. You don’t have to stick to the typical gold and green!!

  • Sprinkles (Michaels) An eco-friendly version that doesn't litter campus! ;) To see what it would look like, check out Kaitlin’s graduation session here!

  • Black & Gold Graduation Confetti Set (Amazon Prime) These will need to be mixed with chunky glitter because the pieces are so heavy! I’ve also had grads use mini “$” and dollar bills, but do not blow as well :(

  • Green Foil Confetti (Amazon Prime) There are lots of mixes that sell in stores as well. The one shown above is an iridescent mix.

All that Glitters is Gold

When it comes to the big moment, remember these tips:

  1. Hinge forward at the waist. This creates a more flattering jaw line and body proportion.

  2. Dump a whoooollllleeee lot of glitter into your palms! You want a large mound in there!

  3. Position your hands at chin level, slightly in front of your face.

  4. Smize! (Smile with your eyes!) Check out this article and this video if you don’t know what I’m talking about!

  5. Blow like a Victoria’s Secret angel blows a kiss, not like a puffer fish!!!

The rest is up to your photographer, but hopefully this gives you a good start! ;)
