Mitzi Duke | 49er Graduate | Charlotte, NC

What degree(s) are you earning? What do you plan on doing after graduation?

I am earning a bachelor's of science degree in psychology with two minors in American's studies and Women's & Gender studies.

I am still looking at potential places to work when I graduate but my long-term goal is to work for a year then continue on to grad school with a concentration in child psychology. My ideal job is to become a child psychologist but I am open to whatever adventure life brings my way :)

Favorite spot on campus and why?

I have two favorite places on campus. The first one is the Botanical Gardens (hence why I really wanted pictures here). I have always loved nature and the outdoors. People are often too caught up in the business of our technology filled world to enjoy the simple things. It also reminds me of my dad who passed away when I was in middle school. He loved being outdoors just as much as I do. When I'm surrounded by all of the trees and flowers in the garden and the sun is shining, I always think of him.

My second favorite place on campus is the 10th floor of the library. It is so quiet and the view is amazing. I used to take naps there freshman year in between classes if I didn't feel like walking all the way to my dorm. It's a great place to study, nap, or eat without being judged lol.

What has been your favorite memory at UNC Charlotte?

My favorite memory at UNCC is probably collective stories about how I met each of my close friends. I am so thankful for each of them because they have been my support system away from home. I will miss the convenience of late night cookout runs, starbucks runs, making dinner together, snow days, sporadic "party nights" and much more.

Most valuable lesson learned during your college career?

The most valuable lesson that I have learned during my college career is that it is impossible to plan your whole life because change is inevitable. I am a planner and I had this set plan for my future, but a lot has changed over the past four years. It is fine to have goals but life is so much more than that. It's about the people you meet along the way and the places you go and the things you learn.
